In Norway, in the 1800's people moving to America often took the surmane similar to the farm name that they lived in Norway. On the Atlantic Ocean side of Norway and about 50 miles North of Bergen, there is a fjord called Sognefjord (SF). About 60 miles up the Sognefjord and on the south side is Vik, the area where the Tryti farm is located, see Vikøyri. You can look for this on google earth, google maps, bing, etc. If using bing.com go to http://www.bing.com/maps/ and enter Vik Norway than zoom in (use "Road" format) until the farm names show up. Go South on highway 13 to less than 1.5 miles from the fjord (i.e. water) and see the Tryti farm.

Crest / Coat of arms : In Norway there are no family Crests.

Norway is divided in 19 provinces (counties), which are further divided in municipalities, as well as the city of Oslo, which is a county by itself. VIK municipality is in Sognefjord which is part of the provines of the three fjords. The arms show the geographical situation in the province; three large fjords protruding into the land. The three fjords are the Nordfjord, Sunnfjord and Sognefjord. As nearly all villages and towns are situated on one of these fjords and the name of the province is based on the fjords, the symbolism is obvious. The arms for the three fjords is seem at http://www.ngw.nl/int/nor/sognfjord.htm . The Coat of Arms for VIK (three knives) is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vik .  It shows three knives for the cutting of leaves, which was used as fodder for animals. This type of knife was typical for the area. Vik was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The original municipality was identical to the Vik parish (prestegjeld) with the sub-parishes (sokn)  of Hopperstad, Hove, Arnafjord, and Kvamsøy. On 1 January 1964 the sub-parish of Kvamsøy (population: 363) was transferred from Vik to Balestrand and the sub-parish of Vangsnes (population: 189) was transferred from Balestrand to Vik. Also on this date, the Nybø and Nygjerdet farms were transferred to Høyanger. All these changes gave Vik a total population of 2,623. On 1 January 1992 the sub-parishes of Feios and Fresvik were transferred from Leikanger to Vik. This added 572 residents to the population of Vik

There were six (6) sections (Burks) to the Tryti farm and the people that lived in the different Burks of the farm were not blood related. The history is that people from two Burks of the farm came to America: Northern IA / Southern MN. These are the two main branches that I am currently tracking. Each person in each family tree has a number associated with when I entered the name in the data base. The first data base has a main person listed as Ola Olson (Olsen) Djuvvik Tryti Trytten (8) Tryti Burk NR 3 and the second data base has a main person listed of Gyrid Tollaksdotter Seim (187), mother of Ola (Ole C.) Kristofferson Trytten (87) in the second data base.

The Trytten's ancestors (the Tryti's) went to a stave church named "Hopperstad Stave Church" which is located in a valley near Vik, Norway. The church is about 800 years old. The church records are called BYGDEBOK. Tryti info is contained in BYGDEBOK for VIK I SOGN Norway VOL. 3 PART II reprinted in 1958.

Bygedebok are the histories of the farms, NOT the church records.  Kirke/church records are where one finds records of birth/baptism, confirmation, marriage, death/burial.  Vik's records are available free from the Digitalarkivet web site, both in transcribed formats and in microfilm images.

Ola, Ivar, Guttorm etc. did not change their last name to Tryti/Trytten. They took surnames in America similar to farm name in Norway. For that period of history, there were no surnames in Norway (or the rest of Scandinavia).  Permanent surnames were not mandated in Norway until 1923.  The legal name was what we called the first name.  The patronymic name is the father's first name + the suffix sen or datter to denote if the child was the son or daughter of the father.  The farm name was an address of sorts, but until the emigrants got to America it was not a surname in Norway (at least not until after the law mandating surnames went into effect).  For the pre-1900 time period it can only be interpreted as a location.  Guttorm Olsen Tryti/Trytten should be understood as "Guttorm, son of Ole, residing at Tryti" and Guttom Olsen Tryti is just a 'shorthand' way of saying the same thing minus the extra words.  [Many beginner genealogy researchers don't seem to understand how the patronymic naming system works, but it is vital to understand how it works, including the abbreviations for the suffixes, to find the accurate info in Norwegian records.  Patronyms are NOT "surnames" in Norwegian records in pre-1900 Norway... until they get to America where they had to have a surname to fit in... IF the immigrants did not choose to use the farm name as an American surname, and then one must figure out if they used their own patronymic names or that of their father (in this case, it could be either since the father's name was Ole Olsen and Guttorm and his siblings would carry Olsen or Olsdatter as their patronymic names).  Women kept their own names their entire lives under the patronymic naming system, so they are much easier to find in Norwegian records.  [The patronymic naming system is still used today in Iceland and the Faroe Islands where their ancient ancestors were mostly from Norway.]

Check the passenger records from Norway find the data listed under Iver Trytten:

I could not find where Ole Kristofferson Trytten's branch of the family was on the passenger listing but they came over in 1879. They are probably listed in the BYGDEBOK as coming in 1879. Go to http://www.norwayheritage.com/pasquest.asp === Put in Surname name Trytten.

The digital archives in Norway has a listing of Tryti's (People that lived on the Tryti farms) (some of the Tryti's came to America and became Tryttens) Click on the English flag in the upper right to convert to English language.
